a painted sunset tomato to admire
Without a doubt, the Lucky Tiger tomato (70-75 days, indeterminate) is a very good looking tomato, the very ripe ones remind us of a painted sunset. It is reportedly the result of a successful cross between “a beautiful, great-tasting tomato” with Blush. The torpedo-shaped tomato is a yellow-green tomato with orange stripes. It is an indeterminate vine and while reports say it grows well in containers and in the ground, we have only grown ours in a raised bed with cattle panel trellis. This plant is productive and the clusters are typically heavy, so it needs some type of support no matter where it is planted.
Artisan Tomato™, the breeder of this tomato says that the fruit should be picked when they begin to slightly soften -- at which time they are turning from green to yellow-green and may show some marbling depending on weather conditions.
This is an excellent eating tomato, and great in salads especially when they are still greenish and firm. These tomatoes could be mistaken as unripe, however, due to its green color. I think they are better tasting when they are just showing a slight splash of orange. Once the tomatoes are more orange than green and have significantly softened, they taste close to a Roma, which makes it an excellent tomato for salsa and cooking.
The window when these tomatoes soften, however, is quite fast. Am I growing this again next year? Probably not. Most of my Lucky Tiger this year will be used for a homemade pasta sauce for freezing to be enjoyed later in the winter months.
